The Risk team consists of 3 key areas:
Sports, Racing Risk and Quantitative Analysis:
Sports:
The Sports Department was
formed in 2002 with 4 traders, since then this number has grown to 50 traders.
The growth in the Sports Department can be attributed to the increased
availability of the Internet, huge growth in Betting in running, the increase
of live TV coverage on main stream TV, our access to hundred of TV stations
worldwide and offering the best sports betting product in the market.
The Sports Department operates
close to 24 hours a day covering 72 sports ranging from the traditional sports
(football, golf, rugby etc) to the minority sports (Athletics, UFC, Water polo
etc). The Head of Sports oversees a department made up of an Ante post team, a
Betting in running team, and a Sports Risk team. Our Ante post team price up
matches/events, monitor bets/liabilities, change prices, react to news and
updates.
Betting in running is the
fastest growing part of our business and our team covers a range of live
events. Our Betting in running team cover approx. 1100 football matches and 400
tennis matches each month. Our Sports Risk team are responsible for monitoring
and clearing bets from customers along with monitoring the daily company
liability in all events and markets.
Our Sports Department liaise
with the Retail Help Desk and Customer Service offering our customers the best
product and service.
Racing Risk:
Horseracing and Greyhounds is
our most traditional product and the Racing Department has been in existence
since the company's inception although until 2002 the horseracing traders also
looked after all other sports. Currently the Racing Department are responsible
for the odds compilation, trading and risk management of the company's
horseracing and greyhound product which accounts for 85% of turnover in our
retail estate and 50% of the sportsbook turnover on the internet and
telephones.
We price up all UK and
Irish horseracing and in addition also offer the most extensive product
offering in the industry with our Betting Without, Place Betting, Insurebet and
Match Betting products while our Antepost offering is also second to none. On
the Greyhound front we offer Antepost prices on all of the major Open Race
competitions in Ireland and
the UK
while our in-house expert also gives daily analysis over our audio channels to
punters in our shops.
Basically if it's
got four legs we'll price it for you!!
The team consists of 20
people, 8 traders reporting to the Head of Racing and 10 risk managers and
settlers reporting to the Head of Racing Risk.
Quantitative (or Quants)
Analysis:
We do sums, and one
or two other things!
The Quants team is located in
the Trading room but works with most areas of the business modelling,
analysing, quantifying and automating many areas of the business. The unit
currently comprises about 10 people, with a mixture of numeric, business
analysis and programming skills.
Quants statisticians work on
modelling sporting events such as soccer, horse racing, baseball etc. The
output of their work is the impressive array of derivative markets available
across channels for our customers to bet on.
Our programmers implement
these models above and other time and resource saving algorithms, reducing the
time taken to create, manage and settle the markets we offer our customers.
More strategically, in addition to end user tools, the Quants IT team work
closely with IT in producing enterprise level software for the management of
the Paddy Power trading room.
The analysis side of the unit
gets involved in numerous areas of the business, from Finance in Head Office
all the way over to UK
retail. The team produces data driven business analysis to help managers in
their decision making processes.
If you like working with
numbers and occasionally get mildly excited about what computers and automation
can do then Quants is a grand place to work. We get to work to solve many of
the challenges and issues in various areas of the business meaning that, no
matter what you're working on today, there's always something new and tricky to
be figured out waiting in your inbox.
